Africa remains largely a terra incognita in Greece. This course examines political and economic developments in Africa from the colonial era to the present day. Since the early 21st century, higher rates of economic growth, increased interest from China, and certain other factors (such as migration, armed conflicts, and environmental threats) have heightened global interest in the continent. The study of Africa is particularly compelling for political scientists and international relations scholars because it involves the actions of both state and non-state actors in an environment where regime survival is often the paramount concern.
